Aftercare

Congratulations on your new tattoo!

You now have a piece of art on your skin, and it deserves the best care. After getting tattooed, your skin is essentially a wound that needs time to heal. No worries— with proper care, your tattoo should be fully healed in about six weeks.

The first steps after your tattoo

  • If your tattoo is covered with plastic wrap, you can carefully remove it after about 2 hours.

  • If wound spray or adhesive film was used, leave it on until it naturally comes off. This can stay on for up to 5 days.

  • You can shower as usual, but try not to let the tattoo steam too long or get too hot.

Tattoo aftercare

  • Wash your tattoo twice a day with a mild, fragrance-free soap. No perfumes—your fresh ink won’t like that.

  • Gently pat it dry with a clean towel after washing. Do not rub.

  • Apply a thin layer of the ointment recommended by your tattoo artist. This helps your skin heal properly.

Things to avoid during healing

  • Touch your tattoo as little as possible. Always wash your hands before caring for it.

  • Do not scratch! Even if it gets itchy, leave it alone.

  • Avoid tight or dirty clothing. Make sure your tattoo can breathe.

  • No bandages or plasters. Let the tattoo breathe.

  • Hot tubs, swimming pools, and saunas should be avoided for 3 weeks.

  • Sunlight or tanning beds should be avoided for 6 weeks. Your skin is extra sensitive to UV during this time.

Extra tips after healing

Even once your tattoo is fully healed, be careful with the sun. Always apply sunscreen to your tattoo when going outside. This helps keep your tattoo looking sharp and prevents fading.

Important

If you notice your tattoo becoming extremely red, swollen, continuously bleeding, or producing pus or fluid, contact your doctor. Don’t worry though—this rarely happens.
